Hearing protection for vehicle body repairers and workshops

In a vehicle workshop, it is usually only loud in phases: a few minutes of straightening, sawing or grinding, then quiet work again. A series of measurements by the Austrian accident insurance institution AUVA shows how much this adds up: panel beaters reach a daily exposure of 87.1 dB(A).

Noise exposure in the workshop by occupation

Daily noise exposure level LA,EX,8h: average and range from the 5th to the 95th percentile, AUVA Report 83, table 10
OccupationDaily exposureRange
Panel beaters, vehicle body repair87.1 dB(A)78 to 92 dB(A)
Vehicle painters84.4 dB(A)73 to 89 dB(A)
Vehicle valeters81.4 dB(A)73 to 87 dB(A)
Vehicle mechanics81.0 dB(A)75 to 84 dB(A)

For assessment, AUVA recommends assuming the 95th percentile. Panel beaters are then at 92 dB(A) and painters at 89 dB(A), both clearly in the range where hearing protection must be worn.

How loud are impact wrenches, air saws and the like?

Average sound pressure level LA,eq per task, AUVA Report 83, table 1
TaskLevelMeasurements
Pneumatic chisel106.9 dB(A)14
Pneumatic saw101.5 dB(A)81
Pneumatic wire brush98.3 dB(A)39
Pneumatic hand router97.6 dB(A)26
Straightening97.4 dB(A)66
Compressed air gun96.8 dB(A)151
Angle grinder96.6 dB(A)154
Pneumatic impact wrench95.9 dB(A)154
Pneumatic ratchet94.5 dB(A)111
MIG/MAG welding87.8 dB(A)83
Pressure washer85.7 dB(A)58
Random orbital sander85.3 dB(A)111
Background level, workshop70.9 dB(A)248

The noisy tasks often last only minutes. For panel beaters, for example, AUVA found 8.1 minutes of straightening and 3.6 minutes with the pneumatic saw per day. Because noise counts by energy, these few minutes still push the daily exposure up.

Level at the ear = level − (M − real-world deduction), HML check according to DGUV Rule 112-194 (2024). Target range 70 to 80 dB(A). A calculated guide that does not replace a risk assessment.

For short, noisy tasks, what matters most is that hearing protection is within reach and quickly fitted. BG BAU recommends earmuffs when hearing protection is often put on and taken off. For straightening at around 97 dB(A), every hearing protector in the table is in the target range, the EP906 and EP904 earmuffs with 74 and 77 dB(A). At the pneumatic saw at around 102 dB(A), disposable and reusable earplugs and the EP902 and EP906 earmuffs fit; banded earplugs and the EP904 are just above at 81 to 83 dB(A).

In the workshop and body shop

  • Hang earmuffs at the workstation so that they are within reach before every noisy task.
  • Low-noise equipment: AUVA mentions noise-reduced compressed air guns and grinding discs. Under the STOP principle (substitution, technical, organisational, personal), hearing protection is the last measure.
  • Neighbouring workstations are also loud when straightening or sawing is going on.
  • Mechanics with a daily exposure of around 81 dB(A): from 80 dB(A), the employer must make hearing protection available and offer hearing checks where the risk assessment shows a risk.

Frequently asked questions

How loud is an impact wrench?

In AUVA measurements in vehicle workshops, pneumatic impact wrenches averaged 95.9 dB(A), from 154 measurements.

Which hearing protection for a vehicle workshop?

For short, noisy tasks, earmuffs are suitable because they are quick to put on and take off. For straightening and grinding at around 97 dB(A), all earmuffs in the range fit according to the HML check, from EP902 to EP904.

Is hearing protection mandatory in a vehicle workshop?

That depends on the daily exposure. According to AUVA, panel beaters average 87.1 dB(A), above 85 dB(A): hearing protection must be worn there. For mechanics at around 81 dB(A), the employer must make hearing protection available.
