Earplugs for work

EP1227OWY disposable earplugs, orange/white/yellow · AI-generated video

Earplugs for industry, trades and food production, tested to EN 352-2:2020, PPE category III with EU type examination by notified body 2777. From formable disposable PU foam earplugs with SNR 37 dB and washable reusable earplugs made of silicone and TPE to banded earplugs for short periods of noise.

The attenuation you need depends on the noise level at the workplace. The aim is 70 to 80 dB(A) at the ear. The “Recommended at” column shows the suitable level range for each product, and the hearing protection finder calculates it for your value.

Which earplugs suit your noise level?

Set the level or choose a noise source: the calculator shows for each product what reaches the ear. The hearing protection finder compares earplugs and earmuffs together.

95dB(A)
Type of noise

e.g. grinding, cutting-off and woodworking machines, compressed air, impact wrenches, nailers. Classification according to DGUV Rule 112-194, annex 2.

Level at the ear = noise level − (M value − real-world deduction). Target under the hearing protection: 70 to 80 dB(A).

A calculated guide that does not replace a risk assessment. Whether hearing protection is suitable also depends on wearing time, warning signals, glasses or helmet and a wearing trial. The finder does not check peak sound pressure levels (dB(C), e.g. from impacts or nailers); they must also be considered in the selection.

From 85 dB(A), hearing protection must be worn and the area is marked as a noise area.

“Recommended at”: workplace levels of mid- to high-frequency noise at which 70 to 80 dB(A) reach the ear according to the HML check of DGUV Rule 112-194 (M value minus real-world deduction).

Disposable or reusable?

Disposable PU foam earplugs attenuate most and are always fresh, but take some practice to insert. Reusable flanged earplugs made of silicone or TPE are quicker to insert and, according to the user instructions, can be used up to five times after cleaning. Compared in detail in Foam, silicone or TPE.

With cord, band or detectable?

A cord keeps the earplugs around the neck during breaks. Banded earplugs are inserted in seconds and ideal for short, recurring periods of noise. In food and pharmaceutical production, blue detectable earplugs are part of foreign body management.

How much attenuation do I need?

The SNR alone is not enough for selection. DGUV Rule 112-194 calculates with the M value, for low-frequency noise with the L value, and subtracts a real-world deduction: 9 dB for formable foam earplugs, 5 dB for pre-moulded earplugs and banded earplugs. Level at the ear = noise level − (M − deduction). More in SNR and H/M/L explained.

Handing out on site

For disposable earplugs there is the EP500SGY wall dispenser with refill bags of 500 pairs. Mounted at the entrance to the noise area, hearing protection is exactly where it is needed.
