Colour and use
Patterned in orange/purple/white, the only colour combination of the series with purple. Anyone who wants to tell hearing protection for visitors, outside contractors or particular areas apart from the rest of the issue can fix a colour of its own for that. That is a suggestion for the workplace, not a property of the product.
The attenuation values stay the same in all colours: SNR 37 dB, H 37, M 35, L 30 dB. The selection by the residual level at the ear therefore applies equally to every colour.
What reaches the ear
For selection, DGUV Rule 112-194 works with the M value and deducts a real-world deduction: M 35 dB minus 9 dB gives 26 dB. For mid- to high-frequency noise, the EP1227OPW then lets through at the ear:
- Noise level 90 dB(A): 64 dB(A) at the ear (Check for overprotection)
- Noise level 95 dB(A): 69 dB(A) at the ear (Check for overprotection)
- Noise level 100 dB(A): 74 dB(A) at the ear (Recommended)
- Noise level 105 dB(A): 79 dB(A) at the ear (Recommended)
- Noise level 110 dB(A): 84 dB(A) at the ear (Not recommended)
At the ear, 70 to 80 dB(A) is recommended. The EP1227OPW is therefore in the recommended range for workplace levels of about 96 to 106 dB(A). Below that it attenuates more than necessary and there is a risk of overprotection; above it, the attenuation is no longer enough. For predominantly low-frequency noise the L value applies (30 dB minus 9 dB equals 21 dB): the recommended range is then about 91 to 101 dB(A). Your own levels are calculated by the hearing protection finder; the calculation is shown in Calculating the residual level at the ear.
Certification and evidence
The EP1227OPW is category III PPE under Regulation (EU) 2016/425. EU type-examination certificate 2777/13330-05/E05-02 from SATRA Technology Europe names the item number expressly; it was issued on 29 October 2025 and is valid until 18 October 2029. What such a certificate contains is explained in Reading an EU type-examination certificate.
Whether SATRA Technology Europe is notified for hearing protection can be checked in the European Commission’s NANDO database: the body is listed there under identification number 2777 for “Equipment providing hearing protection” and “Protective Equipment against harmful noise”, with EU type-examination (annex V) and the procedures of annexes VII and VIII of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 (checked on 18 October 2026). How a CE marking with an identification number is read is explained by the Commission’s Blue Guide in section 4.5.1.5; more in CE marking and PPE category III.
All documents for the EarProtect products are collected under data sheets. If a document shows a different address from the legal notice, the guide New company address: is the certificate still valid? helps.
Other versions
Other colours of the EP1227 series: EP1227BWG (blue/white/green), EP1227G (green), EP1227GY (green/yellow), EP1227YO (yellow/orange), EP1227OWY (orange/white/yellow). All colours have the same test values; the overview with a comparison table is on the page Disposable foam earplugs. There are also earplugs with cord, in a case and the detectable version EP1227BD.
Correct use in four steps
- 01
Roll
With clean fingers, roll the earplug into a thin, tight cylinder.
- 02
Pull the ear
With the other hand, gently pull the ear up and back to straighten the ear canal.
- 03
Insert
Push the earplug quickly and deeply into the ear canal.
- 04
Hold
Hold it in place with a finger for 30 to 60 seconds until the foam has expanded. Remove slowly with a twisting motion.

Frequently asked questions
What does the item number EP1227OPW mean?
EP1227 is the series of conical PU foam earplugs; the letters after it stand for the colour: OPW corresponds to the English colour names O orange, P purple, W white. All colours of the series have the same test values.
Does the EP1227OPW attenuate differently from the other colours?
No. All six colours have SNR 37 dB, H 37, M 35 and L 30 dB and the same declaration of conformity. The colour serves recognition.
Is the EP1227OPW reusable?
No. According to the user instructions the disposable earplugs are not reusable. They are stored cool, dry and protected from frost and light; unopened, they keep for three years from manufacture.
For which noise levels is the EP1227OPW suitable?
According to the HML check of DGUV Rule 112-194, for mid- to high-frequency noise of about 96 to 106 dB(A), for low-frequency noise of about 91 to 101 dB(A). Your own values are calculated by the hearing protection finder.
How many pairs does the pack of the EP1227OPW hold?
2,000 pairs, 200 per dispenser box.
Where do I find the data sheet and certificate for the EP1227OPW?
The data sheet, user instructions and declaration of conformity are on this page under downloads, all documents under data sheets. For the certificate see Reading an EU type-examination certificate.
